Midnight
July sees continued momentum across the Midnight ecosystem, driven by proactive policy engagements and Nightforce leaders and further releases. This edition of State of the Network includes the Midnight Academy’s response to regulatory consultations, the release of Midnight City V2, new partnerships with Token Terminal and Dune, along with fresh developer educational sprints and a new Midnight Academy module.

Championing rational privacy

The Midnight Foundation’s mission is to grow the Midnight network, and to support its global community. Fulfilling this mission involves proactive work with regulators worldwide to improve understanding of privacy-enhancing technology. Recent policy engagements include formal comment in response to the US Treasury's joint FinCEN/OFAC proposal on the GENIUS Act. Read more about why this engagement with policymakers is important here.

The Midnight Foundation’s response emphasizes that effective compliance depends on regulatory visibility rather than total public transparency. Public ledgers broadcast transaction histories to the open web, which creates surveillance and commercial risks, whereas selective disclosure and zero-knowledge proofs execute pre-settlement sanctions screening while protecting user privacy. The response urges regulators to measure compliance programs by operational outcomes instead of defaulting to legacy public-chain architectures. Keep an eye on the Midnight blog to learn more.

The Midnight Foundation has also submitted a formal response to the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority and Bank of England's Call for Input on the future of tokenisation. Expect additional updates as the Midnight Foundation contributes to public policymaking in the coming months.

Applications

Midnight City V2 is now live with an overhauled digital world, updated locations, and highly customizable agents deploying into the simulation right now. This release accelerates the agentic civilization evolving alongside the Midnight network.

Expanded customization options are now available for these agents, allowing for precise control over their personalities and instructions which influence how they interact with the world and other agents. Learn more about Midnight City V2. and follow Midnight City on X to see how to get your agent deployed faster.

Ecosystem

Nightforce drives active community growth, while two new data partnerships expand visibility into network activity.

Nightforce Leaders

Over 2,000 recruits joined the Nightforce this year, which has helped to drive community engagement and expansion, doubling the Midnight Discord community to 50,000 members.

The most engaged and impactful community members become Nightforce leaders and supercharge activity across regions or through content creation and support in Midnight’s Discord server. Nightforce leaders accelerate community activity by organizing local events and guiding new recruits, earning early access to upcoming features and private workshops. Read the latest blog about Nightforce leaders to learn more about what makes a top contributor.

Ecosystem Partners

Token Terminal partners with the Midnight Foundation to integrate an operational data pipeline that extracts raw blockchain data. This partnership transforms raw on-chain information into standardized financial and usage metrics, including transaction counts, block times, and contract deployments. These metrics populate the Layer-1 dashboard, providing a single, reliable reference for developers, investors, and network users.

Check out the dashboard at Token Terminal.

Midnight's integration with Dune brings standardized, queryable analytics to the network's public state while keeping individual shielded transactions completely private. The new dashboard allows analysts, institutions, and community members to track core network metrics, including transaction throughput, NIGHT token flows, and validator block production. It also provides transparent visibility into Midnight's unique resource economics including monitoring aggregate DUST generation and consumption alongside application adoption and smart contract deployments.

Educational resources

Developer education and community-led knowledge sharing continue to accelerate the Midnight knowledge base. From hands-on SDK courses and AI-powered partner sprints to community deep-dives on ZK architecture, explore the latest resources designed to help you ship faster.

Midnight Wallet Academy Module

The Midnight Academy launched a new module focused on the Midnight Wallet SDK. Developers learn seed-based key derivation, DUST registration, and state management for both shielded and unshielded transactions. This practical course culminates in building a working CLI wallet that executes transfers on the Preprod network. Explore the new course on the Midnight Academy to start building custom wallet integrations.

Midnight Expert Partner Sprint

The latest partner sprint launched on Zealy. Midnight Expert is a plugin marketplace that integrates Midnight development tools directly into Claude Code. This suite includes plugins covering Compact smart contracts, DApp scaffolding, network deployment, and formal verification. Over the two-week sprint, developers install the marketplace, author Compact contracts, deploy DApps to Preprod, and publish build stories, with the top three leaderboard finishers earning $40 in Claude credits funded by Midnight.

The sprint runs through July 29 at 12:00 PM EST, followed by a one-week review period before final winners are announced. Join the sprint on Zealy, track progress on the leaderboard, or inspect the source code on GitHub to start building.

Community content

Community members continue to publish technical tutorials and architecture deep dives, sharing practical insights for developers and reflections on what they learned while building on Midnight:

  • Debugging ZK proof generation errors: Cobra details troubleshooting steps for resolving proof server errors and execution failures. Reflecting on the learning curve, Cobra shared, "I was completely new to building on Midnight... overall, it was both educational and rewarding," highlighting detailed feedback and team responsiveness.
  • Building a private vault DApp: Elliot Lucky provides a step-by-step walkthrough for constructing a confidential storage contract, showing how Compact's native smart contract syntax simplifies complex privacy requirements.
  • Proof server and indexer architecture: Emmanuel Sensai breaks down transaction processing and local proof generation. Sensai noted that hands-on testing clarified the network's core architecture: "What makes Midnight click for me is that the proof server runs locally, so your private data never leaves your machine and only the proof goes on-chain."
  • Full-stack ZK attestation tutorial: Syv builds a complete zero-knowledge attestation protocol featuring selective disclosure, noting that "Midnight significantly lowers the bar for creating ZK privacy-first DApps thanks to Compact... which makes development incredibly accessible."

Releases & Documentation

  • Mainnet upgraded to the Midnight Node 1.0.0 bundle, aligning production with Preprod. Developers must verify node, ledger, indexer, proof server, and Midnight.js versions against the support matrix. RPC and Indexer endpoints remain unchanged.
  • Federated node operators completed the Preprod upgrade to Node 1.0.0, Indexer 4.3.3, and Proof Server 8.1.0 following 23 successful regression tests. Review details in the release notes overview.
  • The Preview network completed a scheduled reset and updated to Node 1.0.1. Review patch details in the Node 1.0.1 release notes.

Updates occur regularly. Check the releases page and the compatibility matrix to stay up-to-date.
